Some claim that the T.N.S. Tyler is actually the once famous U.S.S. Monitor and that it was not actually lost at sea but was instead captured and sold to the Republic of Texas who purchased it for the Texas Navy as the ultimate blockade buster. With it’s rotating turrent, low profile, and iron clad hull, The Tyler was extremely effective in providing covering fire and a blocking force against the Mexican Navy for the blockade runners the Elyssa and Savannah. An inexperienced captain spelled the ships ultimate doom when he ran the ship aground in Galveston Bay. Unfortunately it was just before a major hurricane hit the area. After the hurricane passed, the ship was never heard from again.
