Given the propensity of foreign forces to attempt to blockade the coast, the Texas Navy saw the need to provide for a stronger defense of the coast. With a secrete submarine base on Pelican Island, the Navy saw it as imperative that the area be kept free of mines. The T.N.S. Anson Jones was seen as the ultimate solution. Equipped with the latest minesweeping technology, the Jones was to strike fear in navies across the world looking to stop the Texas Navy in their home ports. Unfortunately, a sneak attack by a fleet of Japanese mini-subs sank the Jones on it’s maiden voyage into the Gulf
