Nicknamed the "tough Old Bird", the Freeport was instrumental in the expansion of the Texas Navy into the southern Caribbean. Legend has it that the oil tanker earned its nickname when it was caught in a waterspout, picked up, carried to the top and dropped 25 miles from its original position with the only resulting damage being a bent radio antenna. The ship was an active part of the Texas Navy for approximately 30 years before disappearing off the coast of Bermuda in a fog bank.
