Bought from the Hungarian Navy, the gunboat was nicknamed the “little ship that could”. The Burleson was known for its ability to take on any opposing warship and come out on the winning end. The Burleson was credited with sinking the top battleship in the Mexican, French, Spanish and Japanese navies. In addition, it severely damaged a German and British top line battleship. Unfortunately, the Texas Navy suffered a tremendous loss when the ship never returned from a training exercise just off the coast of Bermuda.
